Vehicle Registration: 30 Days
New Texas residents generally must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. In Denton County, begin with insurance that meets Texas requirements, complete any required emissions testing, and gather the documents required by the county tax assessor-collector.
Denton County's checklist includes Form 130-U, an original out-of-state title or current proof of out-of-state registration, photo identification, proof of Texas liability insurance and applicable vehicle documentation. Review the county's current checklist for your vehicle before visiting.
Since January 1, 2025, noncommercial vehicles no longer require a Texas safety inspection for registration. Emissions testing is separate and remains required for applicable vehicles in Denton County. It generally applies to gasoline vehicles two through 24 model years old. Electric vehicles, diesel vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds are exempt from emissions testing. Commercial vehicles have separate inspection requirements.
Military personnel and certain nonresident students may have different registration requirements. Check the official guidance before assuming the standard new-resident rule applies.

Texas Driver License: 90 Days
New residents generally must obtain a Texas driver license within 90 days of moving to Texas. DPS allows driving during that period with a valid, unexpired license from a qualifying jurisdiction. Moving to Texas does not give an expired license a new 90-day driving allowance.
Schedule your DPS appointment early and review the official document checklist. Requirements include evidence of identity, citizenship or lawful presence, Social Security information, Texas residency, and applicable vehicle registration and insurance documentation. Applicants transferring an out-of-state license generally surrender that license.
DPS generally requires two printed accepted residency documents showing your name and residential address. Applicants surrendering a valid, unexpired out-of-state driver license or ID are exempt from the usual 30-day residency-document requirement, but must still provide accepted proof of residency.
This checklist summarizes the general requirements; the official DPS instructions control individual cases.

Homestead Exemption: Eligibility and Filing Come First
A residence homestead exemption is a separate property-tax matter. You generally must own the property and use it as your principal residence. Apply through the appraisal district serving the property, rather than through DPS or the county vehicle-registration office.
Generally, your Texas driver license or state ID must show the homestead address. Statutory documentation exceptions may apply, so review the current application and ask the appraisal district about your circumstances.
April 30 is the general residence-homestead application deadline. However, buying or moving after that date does not automatically mean you must wait until the next year or have permanently lost eligibility. A qualifying buyer who acquires a property after January 1 may receive an exemption for the applicable portion of the year if the preceding owner did not receive the same exemption for that tax year.
Texas also generally allows a late residence-homestead application within two years after the delinquency date for the taxes on the homestead. That period is measured from the tax delinquency date, not simply two years after April 30.
For a Denton County property, contact Denton Central Appraisal District to confirm eligibility, the applicable tax year, required documents and the correct filing process. If the property is in another county, use the appraisal district serving that property.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I register my vehicle before I get my Texas license?
Yes. Vehicle registration generally comes before the Texas driver-license application. Denton County requires accepted photo identification, but that does not necessarily mean an already-issued Texas driver license. Review its new-resident document checklist before visiting.
What counts as a Texas residency document?
DPS accepts specified documents such as qualifying utility statements, financial statements and residential lease or mortgage documents. Generally, bring two printed accepted documents showing your name and residential address. Document-age requirements and exceptions apply; check the current DPS list.
Is an emissions test required for every vehicle?
No. In Denton County, emissions testing generally applies to gasoline vehicles two through 24 model years old. Electric vehicles, diesel vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds are exempt from emissions testing. Confirm the requirement for your particular vehicle.
Does closing on a Texas home start the 30- and 90-day clocks?
Purchasing or closing on a home does not by itself start these relocation timelines. The requirements relate to becoming a Texas resident. Someone who moves into a rental before purchasing a home may already have started the applicable timelines.
Can I apply for homestead if I buy after April 30?
Buying after April 30 does not automatically eliminate eligibility. Midyear qualification and late-application rules may apply. Ask the appraisal district which tax year and filing provisions apply to your ownership and occupancy dates.
